Guest Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Why does anyone need to install a different PayPal contrib other than the one that came with OSC? The one that comes with OSC works just fine. I'm confused as to why there are so many PayPal contribs and it's always, noticeably, a hot topic of discussion on this board. Thanks! Andrea

Andrea The stock osC Paypal module works fine UNTIL someone does not return from Paypal to your shop. If that happens you do not have an order written to your DB and you only get a payment confirmation from Paypal without knowing what was ordered. The Paypal contributions have another approach: they already write the order information to your DB before the customer goes to Paypal. If they don't return but do pay you will have the information anyway. If they don't return but also do not pay on Paypal you have an obsolete order (which can be confusing but if you do not get a Paypal confirmation for that order you know it hasn't been paid for). It is hard to recommend the one or the other. In both cases you have extra work when something goes wrong but knowing at least what was ordered tends me to say to use one of the Paypal contribs instead of the osC stock Paypal module. The easiest Paypal contrib to install is the one from the osC team but as I haven't tried any of the others I can't tell if it is also the best/easiest in the end.
Guest Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 I'm really kind of surprised at your answer, Wheel. I expected some long, drawn out answer about SSL and whatnot, after reading all of the 100's of posts I have about this. You guys do know that all you have to do is go into your existing PayPal account and click on Profile on the home-page and set it up so that when the customer is finished paying for the website transaction....you specify where they go next...and they end up back in your website so all is well? I had this problem in recent months, too. Customer didn't come back and his order never made the database. I simply went into my PayPal account and made the necessary changes to 'direct' the customer back when they were finished paying. It's very simple. That's why I'm so confused as to all of these contribs and wasted time spent installing this and that in your website when...all you really have to do is visit the PayPal site and set it up in Profile to redirect your customers BACK to your website when the transaction has been completed...and the order is absolutely in the database. PayPal will ask you for the URL to place to direct the customer back to your site after their payment is finished.....it goes something like this. www.yoursite.com/checkout_success.php Works for me. Andrea

Andrea Andrea, It's not that simple I am afraid. I always had this setting on Paypal but as it is not an immediate return customer still have the chance to screw up. regards, Howard
