primadude Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 I have a basic question regarding taxes and how others are working with Taxes within osCommerce. In Colorado, there are several different tax zones: Example: State: 2.9% County: 1.0% City (Littleton): 3.0% Regional Transporation District (RTD): 1.0% Cultural Facilities District (CD): 0.1% Metropolitan Football Stadium District (FD) 0.1% For example, if my business is located in all these zones, the total tax rate is 8.1%. The rule is that if the customer and your business are in the same "shared" tax district(s), you must pay that appropriate tax. For example, if a customer lives in Castle Rock, Colorado, then the tax that is to be charged to the customer is: State (Colorado) 2.9% + County (Douglas) 1.0% for a total of 3.9%. Since the customer in this example is not in the city of Littleton and determined not to be within RTD, CD and FD zones, those taxes are not due. These tax zones are NOT by zip code. Zip code cannot be used to determine what zone a customer is located in. So, obviously, there is no way for osCommerce to be configured to know what zone a customer is in. So what do you do about that? Do you charge all customers in the state of Colorado the maximum tax that could be incurred (8.1%) if they are in all tax zones and then reimburse the customer after you determine if they are in which zones? I took a state tax class and they said it was illegal to charge and keep extra taxes that are not really required. What do you do??? Thanks, Joe
Guest Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 I have a similar (although less complicated) problem. The tax for Florida residents is 6% but it's 7% for Miami residents. Somebody told me to create a zone by county but I don't know how to do this. I hope that somebody out there will be able to help us.
