Newsletter Timeout and Site Down Time

Hi,

 

I am aware that if you have too many newsletter subscribers, the newsletter can timeout and not send them all. I saw the Bulk Mailer contribution as a fix to this, and was wondering if anyone knew about how many is "too many"? :huh:

 

More importantly, every time I send out the newsletter, my entire site goes down until it's done. The last send took several minutes, so now I'm forced to send them late at night, but I'd still prefer it didn't go down at all. Do other people have this problem or this coming from my ISP? They've been pretty reliable otherwise. Anyone know how to avoid this? If you get the Bulk Mailer and set the number very low (like 20 or something), can you avoid having your site go down?
