Dynamic header section

I have created a new site which has a large header graphic (very pretty). What I want to acheive is that when the user goes to various areas (search, account admin, products, checkout etc.) I want the graphic to change.

 

The obvious route is to put a conditional statement in includes/header.php . The only problem is that i do not know a way of testing to see where the user has got to (ie what section they are in) when header.php is called.
