text display number of feature problem - newbie

I was doing some mods and messed the main_page_tpl & freaked out & did a restore (stupid me, I know). I'm a newbie at this so I freaked out. After that, the tell_a_friend didn't work anymore. Then an idea dawned on me to download the free files and just upload that one file and it worked. I uploaded tell_a_friend & header since there were something wrong with these two files. Then I started to play with the english file, messed it up and upload that one file & my site is back up.

 

The problem I'm having now is when I uploaded these files, the Feature Products page can't display the links to the rest of the Featured Products pages (i.e. 2,3,4,5), so only page 1 can display. And instead of "Displaying 1 of 12 (of 500 new products)" it just has TEXT_DISPLAY_NUMBER_OF_FEATURED.

 

It also changed the Gift Voucher text in the Information Box to BOX_INFORMATION_GV.

 

I looked and looked and can't find where to correct these last two errors.

 

Can anyone please help me?

You had made mods to your english.php when you installed contributions, ie gift voucher and featured products contributions. You need to define what those text fields should say in your english.php by putting them back in. When you uploaded the default english file you lost what you had added to it.

In future, it is best to save the file/s you are about to edit so you can easily replace them back to how they were if you mess up.

Check through the contributions you've added and re-enter the mods to your english.php file.

I tried editing the english file and it crashes the entire site, this is what happened last time. But i took your advise and remembered to download the file first so all is ok. I even tried copying the entire script as a text first and copy & paste it back to the server as is and it still doesn't work. It has to be in the untouched version of the file.

 

This is what I get when I change anything in the file:

 

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/wms24/domains/yoursite.com/public_html/catalog/includes/languages/english.php on line 79

 

I even tried just deleting a character and typing it back in and still get the error.

 

Is this file uneditable? If so, how can I correct the problem?

Thanks Julian, I figured it out.

 

I think it was my browser that was causing the info to be altered when I do any editing in the scripts using the browser. I think it's the different toolbars I installed.

 

So what I did was I made a back up first of the downloaded file, :thumbsup: , then I opened the file with notepad and did my editing there & uploaded it & voila.
