Hi,

We are a small family business consisting of a graphic designer and a business consultant. For the past 3 years we have been creating, deisgning and optimising websites using templates from a provider we pay a retainer to. We have started to look around for different solutions as we are disillusioned with some if their products and ethics. We fully support open source software and would like to go that way. We do not specialise in e-commerce stores but so have requests for them from time to time. What we want to know is how easy is it to upload products to the site, how easy is it for us to design the sites and then train our clients to maintain the product side. What are the sites like for SEO - we have a big problem with this at the moment as there are areas of code we can't access, how easy is it to adapt and design the sites to meet individual clients needs. What are the hosting requirements for an OSCommerce store Currently we are very restricted. We have a good knowledge of html and css. Thanks in advance for any advice and help.

There is no simle answer for "How easy" it is. It depends on your level of expereince. Installing the basic shop and setting it up is pretty easy I would say. Once it is installed, it is more or less ready to run. But then you might want to make changes, like a new logo, colors and the like. While this is not overly difficult, it does take some knowledge of the shops layout and is usually not somthing that is picked up in a week or two.

The package does not come setup for SEO at all. A code change is required to make that happen.

As for the requirements, php and mysql is required. An non-Windows server is preferred, at least in my opinion, but not required.

If you have a good knowledge of html and css then take a look at the Basic Template System. It is very css orientated.
