DarrenJMcCabe Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 Hey guys, stumbled accross osCommerce the other while looking how to set up an online shop for someone, installed it and did some basic configuration without any problems and was suitably impressed. So anyways, what I am hoping I can do with his site is to have an online shop, but to only make that part of the site, I would like to be able to put company info and FAQ's and details about the services he provides as well as the online shop. Is it possible for me to do this all on osCommerce, maybe using a template? So the layout wouldnt be too far off the basic (but I am open to change), then down the left hand side have: Home Did you know? Service Contact Us then in a seperate block below all the items he sells. So the main focus of the site isnt the shop, but the shop is available too. Is this possible? if so how? Also any advice you can give me on setting up a UK online store. I have never done this before. so Any security things I may not have thought of, any legal requirement, basically the benefit of your experience.
skifter Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 Could you include an URL. It is hard to follow what you wan't. In regard to a shop: I don't know english law. so... But With regards to security here are 3 thinks. 1. You should restrict access to the admin Either with .htaccess files or with the Admin user rights comtribution. 2. You can do all the login part in https. But it is not a mayour issue. 3. Your online payment provider MUST use https. But i think they all do. Maybe you should put up the shop and let the community review it for you. :) -- Skifter And suddenly it all went black......
niknakgroup Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 Easy! Just grab and install one of the contributions that allow you to create extra pages within the osc store - one that is good that I know of is "InfoPages Unlimited" (see the contributions section), then simply put the relevant infobox in amore prominent position than the categories and configure your front page accordingly. As for UK law, be very wary of the standard terms and conditions which are doing the rounds - these are viewed by UK trading standards as "restrictive trading conditions" - either get a brief to look it over first, or ask an existing Uk store owner very nicely if you can borrow and modify theirs (yeah, alright, go grab a copy of mine if you like) - for my own purposes I wrote them up and then got trading standards to give them the once over to check that there wasnt anything iffy in there. Also beware that unless you sell perishables (flowers, food and the like), you are legally bound to offer a no quibble 7 day return policy for a complete refund (you can withold postage costs if you like). This is regulated by the Distance Selling regulations - for the purposes of UK law, internet purchases are treated the same as mail order purchases. As far as security goes, this is pretty much the same as any site anywhere in the world. If you want customers to pass on their details, you need to give them the confidence that these details will be properly looked after and protected. Look into the necessary ssl certificates if you are collecting credit card details yourself. It is not a legal requirement, but very advisable to at least look into the Data Protection Act as well to see whether it woul;d be in your best interests to register or modify your site to cover your own back. Hope that gives you a good starting base - good luck, and welcome to osc! Please note - if I have suggested a contrib above, it doesnt mean it will work! Most of the contribs are not ones I've used, but may be useful for your particular problem.... Have you tried a refined search? Chances are your problem has already been dealt with elsewhere on the forums..... if (stumped == true) { return(square_one($start_over) } else { $random_query = tep_fetch_answer($forum_query) }
DarrenJMcCabe Posted October 24, 2005 Author Posted October 24, 2005 THanks for the replies guys. Have installed the Infopages contrib without a problem, however how do I use it? I go to my admin panel and I see the Info Manager, where I can create pages etc, done that no problems, the page title appears on the new box on the main page, however there is no text on the pages? How do I actually create content for the pages?
skifter Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 I quickie :-) Some time since i installed the module. Am actual almost finished with a contrib that puts the pages in the database. As I remember, the admin module helps you create the files. So you have to use the file navigator in tools. Hope this helps. Othervise post a reply and i'll look on a demo for you. :-) -- Skifter And suddenly it all went black......
