So confused about meta tags

I am so confused about meta tags

 

For the main meta tag of my shop where do I write the description and add the keywords? i.e. which file and where abouts in the file?

 

Also there are so many contributions for meta tags. Which one(s) would people recomend I install?

each author will say theres is the best if you got a php editing program just embed your own in the header.php

id say one that will pick up on your allready made pages txt would be good!

I wouldnt worry too much about meta tags. The most important search engines dont use them anyway

You need to install one of the meta tags contributions, Header Tags or Dynamic Meta Tags. They each do basically the same thing so it is a matter of preference. You need one of these contributions if you expect to do well with the search engines. The most important part of the shop, from an SE perspective, is that the page titles be unique and relate to what is on the page. These contributions do that. You can do it without one of them but it is not a simple matter of going through and changing the title in each file. At the same time, the contributions add the description and keyword meta tags. These are not always used by google, although it will use them occasionally, but yahoo and msn do use them. Again, adding meta tags to each file won't work properly.

 

Don't take the easy way out on something like this. It is one of the most important changes you can make to your shop.

I use Header Tags and think it is the beter of the two. However, I think that Dynamic Meta Tags may be easier to install. Although bpth will change the admin/categories file, which is the most difficult part to change. If you have not made changes to that file, then you can just copy the already edited file over yours (this appies to Header Tags. I don't now if Dynamic Meta Tags has such a file).

You have to optimize the site for the SE's. The first step is to inistall a meta tags contribution as mentioned above. Then you need to properly set it up with properly chosen keywords. There are many other changes needed to properly optimize it. Search in the forums for this topic since it has been covered many times and there is a lot of good adive available.

Relevant content is one of the most important things also links to relevant sites.

 

Avoid things like webrings as they will cause your site to be devalued.

I had a software company install the header tags and and mod_rewrite for SEF url's, all working great now. I tried the cdynamic but stuffed up and had to re-load a back-up, meant my shop as down for a few hours. The cost of getting some-one to do it for me was really worth it as I am new to PHP
