Basic Direction on New OSC Install

I've installed several other (supposedly more robust) shopping carts. But I decided to try my hand at OSC because of the wide community support.

Here's the deal: I want to be able to create a completely customized shopping without having to follow the basic layout with two side columns and one center column.

I have installed OSC and the BTS. Is that a good start? I'm reading as much as I can so that I can make all the right decisions from the get-go and won't have to back track later!

Are there any other contributions that I should be looking into before getting started that will give me the ability to make my own custom CSS-dependent layouts?

BTS is a good start. If you know CSS, or are willing to learn, plus a little HTML knowledge then you can now make your own template for your site. In addition to the standard BTS templates there are two which I have provided (links below my name). I have annotated the CSS for those to make it easier for people to edit and make their own.

Adding contributions will not be so easy using BTS, or any other template system, because the underlying code will have been changed.

Yes, I know CSS/xHTML so that is a piece of cake. But the contributions compatability with BTS makes me nervous. The extensibility of OSC is what draws me to it. In your experience, is it better to skip BTS and just learn how to template OSC out of the box?

I don't want to be handicapped when it comes to adding modules because I am sure there will be some great add-ons that I'll want when I get down to it!

Your thoughts?

Personally, I think BTS is worth the effort. I just finished installing CCGV (Credit Coupons and Gift Vouchers) into a BTS website. It was a total nightmare to do, but you do get the hang of what's required after you work with the system for a while. That's one of the biggest contributions there is to install manually, so others will be a lot easier.

I've actually now got CCGV working better on the BTS system than on any other default osCommerce websites.

Ok, that makes me feel better. Since it's <B>possible</b> just not that simple... that doesn't scare me.

I've been manually installing add-ons to PHPBB and PHPNUKE for years now. So this shouldn't be much different.

Since I see I'm off to a decent start, I'll start looking under the hood and figuring out how to create my own layout using the BTS.

Thanks for you help. I'll check out the links you have provided.

I just discovered something else:

STS (Simple Templating System) - How does that compare to BTS. I see it's straight HTML. Although easier to edit, does it have draw-backs?
