Hello_Kitty Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 I paid for someone to set up a website for me over a year ago and I have no idea where the person is. They were managing it for me and now I'm clueless how websites work. What I really need to know is what exactly is osCommerce? I had some questions for the web hosting company and they never answer I submit tickets and never get a response or get an automated response. So I decide to complain about it and they told me that they will just refund my money and no longer host my website. So now I need to know what I need to do to keep my website up and running and keep my name. Can I just transfer everything to another company? Or will I have to pay someone to build me a totally new website? Can I keep my name? I have absolutely no idea how this works and only have a few days before my website is not working, but I really don't know what role osCommerce plays and what role eDigest plays and how I can keep all my info or at least my domain name. Can anyone kind of give me a little info on this stuff? I would truly appreciate it so much, I really need some help! Thanks!
Wendy James Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 You can transfer your domain to another company if you actually own it, as well as the website you have now but it will take you some work. You will need to download all of the files for your site onto your hard drive, and get the database so you can upload that all to your new host. How you transfer the domain name all depends on how you got it in the first place. You can ask your new host what they need you to do for their end and they can probably walk you through everything else you need to do as far as the domain goes. Most hosts are pretty good about that. The one you have now... sounds not so great. Good luck. Wendy James Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.

I'm going to try to find someone who I can pay to do it, if not hopefully I can figure out how to do it. I have no idea how everything works or how I got everything because I paid someone to set it up for me, then I had all this spyware on my PC and when I tollk it to the shop everything I had saved in my AOL files was gone. So I lost all the information the person gave me and it was over a year ago, but I've been paying eDigest every month and I actually have 2 domain names that will both go to my current website so I guess what I need to figure out who I paid for the domain name. Is that what I was paying monthly to eDigest for? I feel silly even having to ask all these questions but since my website will only be up for 7 more days I need to get things transferred. I really appreciate the info you shared with me. Thank you

This will tell if you are registered as the owner of the domian names, in most cases it will also list your registrar under : Administrative Contact or Technical Contact, Zone Contact: If you are registered as the owner , you can then contact the original registrar to renew/change the dns to your new hosting, or transfeer the domain to a new registrar. Ofcourse you will also have to find and sign up with a web hosting company where you can host your oscommerce site. I just went to the site and checked on my domain names and they have my name listed as the Registrant Contact and the Administrative Contact, but the company who is the Technical Contact is the company who just refunded my payment for this month because of my dissatifaction with their customer service. Is there a way for me to find a lost of companies who work with osCommerce? Hopefully, I will be able to find someone that I can have do all this for me because I think all this stuff is like football to me, I'm clueless. I know how to put in new merchandise and photos and get my orders and that's about all I know how to do with a website. Thanks so much for the information and the link to that website.
