Credit Card required for zero balance

Hello everyone. I've searched for a module for this, and can't find one. Perhaps you all can help.

I like to offer a free download on my oscommerce site, spincraftpatterns.com, because "Free Knitting Pattern" is a top search string and so that customers can sample my products.

However, the shopping cart requires my customers to put in their credit card numbers if they check out with only the free pattern. I have the free pattern also available without going through the cart, but nobody sees it and they yell at me with great indignation every day.

Is there any way for oscommerce to not require a credit card number for a zero balance purchase? I would also love if the same could be true for the Paypal module. I can't use paypal for the same reason.

Connie

Do you want to use OSC's download feature so that you have some information about the people who download that file?

If it's not terribly important, the easier way would be to create a little area on your main page that says, "Free Download of the Day" or something similar with a link to the file. With a couple lines of code, you can force them to login/register when they click the link so that you still keep a record of who has downloaded it.

Please use the forums for support! I am happy to help you here, but I am unable to offer free technical support over instant messenger or e-mail.

That is a nifty idea, but I too am looking for a way to do this using the native OS Commerce tool.
