Moving a site w/ oscommerce to a new server

Hello all, we're moving a site w/ oscommerce to a new server and I was wondering 2 things about the migration.

1- Can we turn the oscommerce store OFF and show a "temporarly closed for maintenance" screen while the DNS server change takes place.

2- Will any member/database info be lost, or will existing members have to "re-register"

Thanks in advance for helping out

Hello Bob,

1. I know alot about web hosting when you move to another server or host you will loose everything and even your database with osCommerce.

2. so when you move to another server it is a new server you will have up load as a new fresh files to the server so in your case existing members have to re-register that can be put into that database

you can't move from one Database to another that is not possible. but there is possibilty if you can able to back up your OSC to your computer system then move it to your new database to the other server. be I don't know how to back up the OSC database yet.

First thing I would do. I would contact your server that is hosting your Domain Name and find out if you can do that.

If I'm not mistaken I can copy the mysql/php database and just move it over to the new server.

Anyone, have experience with this?

Wow! What a lot of bogus information you received.

You can back up your db and import it on the new server, no customer information will be lost.

You can copy the php files over and nothing will be lost. You will have to slightly alter the two configure.php files to match the new server information.

If you have the ability to create an archive of the folder that contains the php files (often the catalog folder) the job is quick and easy.

Local: Mac OS X 10.5.8 - Apache 2.2/php 5.3.0/MySQL 5.4.10 • Web Servers: Linux

Tools: BBEdit, Coda, Versions (Subversion), Sequel Pro (db management)

Awesome to hear,

What about the other question at the top of this thread regarding the temp closed.

Thanks, B

Confusing thread and advise

Anyway, just to sum up. If you have phpmyadmin then export the entire database to an sql file then backup all your site files to your local machine.

Next it is simply a matter of uploading all the files onto the new host and (using phpmyadmin on your new server) import the database file. In theory if you keep the directory structure the same you shouldnt have any troubles. Just make sure your permissions are set correctly on the new server. Oh you'll probably have to go into /includes/configure.php (and admin/includes/configure.php) to make sure your db username and password, paths etc match up for your new server.

As for the second thing, there is no way of switching off osCommerce globally. What i would suggest is renaming index.php to index.old.php and then creating a nice new page to inform your customers that the site will be down. To be honest this will give you more control on what you want to tell your customers than a standard "off switch" notice would.
