Make Credit Card Payment option the default?

I would like the radio button next to the Credit Card payment option in my checkout to be selected by default. I have a cutomer who had mistakenly ticked the pay by cheque method when he had entered his credit card details and meant to pay by credit card. I therefore did not receive the email with the middle 8 digits of his credit card and could not process the order.

Is there some way that I can do this?

Also, is there some way that an order notification can be sent to me when someone places an order paid by cheque? It's handy to know when an order has been placed.
