I'm having what can only be described as a nightmare, after negotiating the more complex and finer aspect of oscommerce i have no idea how to change the welcome page, im still stuck on this:

What's New Here?

Welcome Guest! Would you like to log yourself in? Or would you prefer to create an account?

This is a default setup of the osCommerce project, products shown are for demonstrational purposes, any products purchased will not be delivered nor will the customer be billed. Any information seen on these products is to be treated as fictional.

Error Messages

If there are any error or warning messages shown above, please correct them first before proceeding.

Error messages are displayed at the very top of the page with a complete background color.

Several checks are performed to ensure a healthy setup of your online store - these checks can be disabled by editing the appropriate parameters at the bottom of the includes/application_top.php file.

Editing Page Texts

The text shown here can be modified in the following file, on each language basis:

[path to catalog]/includes/languages/english/index.php

That file can be edited manually, or via the Administration Tool with the Languages->English->Define or Tools->File Manager modules.

The text is set in the following manner:

define('TEXT_MAIN', 'This is a default setup of the osCommerce project...');

The text highlighted in green may be modified - it is important to keep the define() of the TEXT_MAIN keyword. To remove the text for TEXT_MAIN completely, the following example is used where only two single quote characters exist:

define('TEXT_MAIN', '');

More information concerning the PHP define() function can be read here.

Securing The Administration Tool

It is important to secure the Administration Tool as there is currently no security implementation available.

Online documentation can be read at the osCommerce Wiki Documentation Effort site.

Community support is available at the osCommerce Community Support Forums site.

I have been asking the same question here for the past several days and last night I think I finally began to understand it. Will find out for sure in a couple of hours when I try to actually edit it. They say it needs to be done by downloading the file, editing it in a text editor and then re-upload it to the site.

Look for the two threads by me, Greta, on this forum that have been started in the last two or three days and read those. I was given a lot of great information on how to do this.

Will check back in a few hours and see if you were able to find the threads and how you are doing. At least one of the threads might be on about the 4th page ny now.

Good luck!

Hi scott

Just read what you have posted the answer is in front of you :lol: LOL :blink:

Scott, do not use the Administration Tool to edit the main page. Most people here say editing there will damage your files. They say to download the file, edit it in a text editor and then FTP it back to your site.

I haven't had time to do mine yet, but here are a few excerpts from what I have been told about this in the past couple of days. Also there is a wonderful tutorial at demodemo.com. Shows all the steps, except it is doing it in the Administration Tool, which, as I just said, you should not do. But it does show what you are supposed to delete and tells you which files to go to.

"The change for the generic text that is on the default osCommerce store's introduction and welcome is altered in the catalog/includes/languages/english/index.php file. This index.php file will need to be changed in all of the language folders. The words "There are no products to list in this category," on the bar that comes up when you click a category is also changed in this file." - Source: http://www.oscommerce.info/kb/osCommerce/c...n_and_Layout/53

"Regarding the where to go to change text, this can be found in catalog/includes/languages/english/" - Someone on this forum said this.

"You just need to make sure that you place all of your text and html inside of the two apostrophes. Find this line in index.php." - info from somone on this forum

"All text is contained in the language folders. The file languages/english.php is like an overview language file which has text for stuff like info boxes, heading titles, etc. Each page then has its own language file by the same name, e.g. the main page, index.php has a language file called "index.php" in Languages/English (or whatever language). You will find in English/index.php that there is a line saying something like define ('TEXT_MAIN', '.....') This is the main text of the main page. You may edit it how you will. ----------" Make sure you put your text between the two apostrophes in the define statement.

I made some more notes while people were trying to help me change my text. If what I have typed above doesn't help, let me know and I will share some more of the comments with you.

I found the file to edit by clicking on the folder beside Store, then clicked on the folder beside includes, then the one beside languages, then english, then index.php (or in my case it is default.php). It takes a lot of clicking to get there.

Let us know how you are doing with this. I know how frustrating it is!

Greta,

you are on the right track. The easiest way to edit the main welcome page is in a text editor...there's a number of free ones out there that are very good. The file that you need to edit is the index php which can be found by going to catalog=>includes=>languages=>english(or your language) =>index.php. All of the words on the main page are in this file.

Cheers folks for the replies.

I have turned into an absolute amateur with this. I tried to it manually because I couldn't find any of the free text editors, and ive ended up making a right pig's ear of it.

So..... does anybody have any of the names of where i can use a free text editor before my head blows up.

Also, whilst having a little play- ive managed to get the text to appear ABOVE the Oscommerce banner.

If any1 has got the index.php file on their comp in the original format would you post it please, i think ill go back to basics.

I need a holiday!! ;)

Anybody got any ides plz. If any1 has got the original index.php file them i don't mind starting again.

Im just a little stumped at the moment!!

Scott, I think the original text is in the demo at demodemo.com. You'll have to click two or three times to get to the right page. There is a list of all the tutorials and you will need to click on the one for editing the main page.

Scott, I think the original text is in the demo at demodemo.com. You'll have to click two or three times to get to the right page. There is a list of all the tutorials and you will need to click on the one for editing the main page.

Hi Greta

I would assume all is well with your oscommerce set up these days or perhaps you have moved on, yet if you can remember where to edit main page heading...What's New Here?

I would appreciate it

thanks

Almost at the bottom of the file:

} elseif ($category_depth == 'top') {
 define('HEADING_TITLE', 'What\'s New Here?');

If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you.
