Use of State box

Hi all :)

 

I'm wondering what the purpose of the State box is, and if I can manipulate it to my needs.

 

I posted this thread in Install:

but thinking about it, I was probably in the wrong place.

 

As I understand it, the "states" are linked to the "zones" array in the database, right?

 

As it stands, if you type in a state name for a country that has a list of entries in the Zones table, then you are prompted to pick one from the list if your entry doesnt match the tabled list.

If the country has no entries, whatever you enter is accepted.

 

Basically, I'm wanting to use the state (zone) entered by a customer to dictate whether or not they are offered "store pickup" as a shipping option.

 

I've installed that contrib, and it allows me to specify a "zone" for each pickup location, and stipulates that the customer must be in that 'zone' to use it as an option.

 

Now, firstly am I correct in my above thinking of how the zonation works? or do the shipping modules run from a different 'zone' list than the one I'm talking about?>

 

Secondly, would there be any way to make the State (zone) dropdown appear as soon as the relevant country is picked from the list? it seems kinda strange to allow them to type something in if we're validating against a set list already!

If not, no biggy, I guess I can run with it how it is.

 

I really hope the above makes vague sense to someone!
