I just clicked on my site to make sure everything was ok and check some prices and I came face to face with an old version of the site. thinking my browser was playing tricks I refreshed, but it stayed the same. on entering the shop, the contribs I have added, the bits I have changed, the products I have added etc.etc. have all reverted back to a time long ago when I first started using OScommerce. I checked out the admin side, to see if I had inadvertantly restored a previous backup or something, but the most recent ones don't appear. I have also lost all customer info - I had 65, now I am back down to 9!!!! all the info about the orders that are being processed has gone as well????

Can anyone help me? AND QUICK!!!!!!

Thanks

Jemma

It sounds as though your hosting company screwed up, and restored an old version of your site to cover their tracks. I would be very angry and demanding some answers. Things like this just don't happen on their own.

Web host finally replied to say that there hard drives died last night and all weekly backups had been lost, but that they have been able to manage to get stuff up and running from their monthly backups - last one they did was august.

Everyone always says backup backup backup on the forums, so I have been regularly clicking backup on the 'database' backup button in the admin section of my store, however these are now all gone thanks to the web hosts crash.

Surely a webhost should do daily backups???? what more should I have done to back up????

Well I dont want to be a smarthead or anything.. But ALWAYS backup your DB to more then one source. ;) You can download your db localy or do it with a db manager.

I myself have rutines for doing backups each week and I even backup my shop.. EVERYTHING ;)

Better safe then sorry..

PS: Sorry for your loss though..

I am really really desperate as have done so many changes over the last couple of months and thought I was backing up.

Doesn't sound like it. If I were you I'd find a diffferent host. This could never happen at a serious hosting firm.

Local: Mac OS X 10.5.8 - Apache 2.2/php 5.3.0/MySQL 5.4.10 • Web Servers: Linux

Tools: BBEdit, Coda, Versions (Subversion), Sequel Pro (db management)

Well, at least they owned up to the fact that their hard drives on that server died. It's not acceptable that they only run monthly backups, but as far as your site is concerned YOU are responsible for backing up all files/folders and the database. And sorry - but you have lost it if you didn't back it all up.

It's simply not safe to backup the database to the 'backups' folder on the website, because if the site gets damaged then so will the backups. There is an option when you click 'Backup' to tick a box and backup via download.

However, if your host uses the Ensim Pro web hosting control panel you can backup everything vai download or via transfer to another web hosting account elsewhere, automatically, via FTP. This backs it all up, your files, fodlers, database, e-mail addresses etc and all of the settings in your hosting control panel.
