How do I migrate an existing database to a new install?

Guest

Recommended Posts

I have an existing installation that has some problems since attempting to upgrade some months ago.

I have since set up another installation with BTS and some other contribs.

I need to know step by step how to bring existing product and customer data to the new site. I need to know the cautions that may exist also.

Help please? Or even a link to where this might have been already spelled out?

Thanx!

this would very much depend on what has been changed by the contribs ... was the products table touched?

Hi, depending on your hosting package, you might be able to simply make a backup of your database (i.e. download it to your computer), then restore the backup into your new database.

Does your server have a control panel feature like CPanel? If so, it should be intutively easy, just go into the "Backups" section, download a backup of the oscommerce database, then log into the server where you have your new website, go into "Backups", upload the Backup File, then hit the restore button.

If you don't, you might have to ask your hosting provider, or at least wait for someone else here to post...

maybe I misunderstood, but to me it sounded as if the old database and the new one are different due to a bucnh of contribs installed to te new one.

A backup would not work then.

My original installation was done without the record keeping that I NOW do. (I shamefully admit...)

Therefore, I cannot say if the Products Table has changed or not. The same goes for the Customers Table.

I do have full access to cPanel, phpMyAdmin, etc. The fact is, it was via a function of my upline host that offered a "button" to upgrade osC to MS2.2 that the problems began. <_<

I failed to spot the problems at the time while all was considerably fresher in my mind.

My prior database experience was with dBase and some early FoxBase (yes, that dates me). I think I can go look at the structure and perhaps compare both tables with the empty new ones...

I will post back what I find about differences. Meanwhile, ALL help and suggestions are extremely appreciated!

Thanx to all that have replied!

I am creating a new OSC store with a new hosting company but am having trouble restoring my old database into the new store. I need my customer and order information in the new store. I downloaded my old osc databse, logged into the new cpanel, uploaded database into backups, and in admin did a restore. After it said done, none of the info from my old database had been restored. Any ideas? Please HELP!

Thanks,

Stephen

All phpmyadmin backup scripts have the database name in the script (right in the header part).

I'd check the one you uploaded to backups folder and delete all you have in the header up to where the first table starts. Then reupload it.

Next step si to create a new database with the name and login/pw specified in your config files (change the values there to match as you most probably will be having a host specific prefix).

Then try again. You can also call your database file after trimming it at the top directly in the phpmyadmin file manager.
