How to dynamically create a category list

I would like to show a list of categories and their subcategories on my default page in the center section. I'd like it to be created dynamically, so I don't have to change it when I change my categories. I'd like each category to link to the category page. I think this will be easier for customers to find things and should help the search engines index my site.

 

I've created the category list manually and put it on my site without actual links.

Its the section called "products we carry".

 

Is there a contribution already that does something similar to this? Or how would you suggest I approach this project. I'd like it to be formatted as close as possible to the example on my site.

See my signature for the Dynamic Sitemap contribution. You can use the class included, which I borrowed from Sitemap MS2, to list the categories. See the code in the dynamic_sitemap.php file for an example of how to use it.
