Hi,

Yes I am a newby to ecommerce(!), and I was wondering whether someone could take the time to explain the following to me, or point me in the direction of a good FAQ.

I want to set up an online store for a client.

1. What do I need. Is it just the following:

shopping cart software

SSL certificate

'payment gateway' (?)

2. What are these things?

3. Where can I find them?

Many thanks to anyone who can take a little time to help me out. I just want to make sure I get this right!

People tend not to like it when you mention what is a payment gateway and im making for a client in the same post, perhpas you should do your homework using google.

Hey,

That's awsome help. Thankyou sooo much. You're really great.

I figure that for people like myself who know absolutley nothing about ecommerce (I'm a graphic designer and intermediate php programmer) a forum such as this would be the perfect place to learn about what I need to get a store up and running. But clearly I was mistaken.

It's a shame that there are people like you in forums that would rather take 2 mins to slate me, rather than 2 mins to help me out.

If it helps your ego, re-read my initial post and pretend I never mentioned a 'client'.

Well Done.

Ha...Grrrr...

Depends what you need and how many products you will have, if you only have a few products just do a html site with shopping cart software such as romancart

If you have lots of products use oscommerce, install it, customize it, then adding a payment gateway is done by adding a module, unless you have your own server you must use a seperate form to process payments, when the customer gets to the payment part a new window opens connected to the secure server of say protx, if you have your own server you can integrate the form into your site so all the payment processing goes on within your site.

So you need

either a html site linked to a basic shopping cart

or the full shop such as oscommerce then use a payment gateway such as protx

you will need a bank account that can acccept credit cards (merchant status) in most cases but not all e.g. 2checkout.

Hope this helps mr snappy..lol

:D

P.S this is an incredibly busy forum, lots of people wanting help and not many people who can, posts dont always get answered.

Because this is a forum specifically for support of osCommerce, you're not going to get much in the way of suggestions for where to get an SSL or a payment gateway.

As far as oscommerce goes, you can get it here...

http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/downloads

There's a knowledge base here

http://www.oscommerce.info/

although this knowledge base contains alot of info about the upcoming release (not available yet), you should be able to find answers to nearly all of your questions there.

As for payment gateways that work with osCommerce, you can find a list of officially supported gateways here (at the bottom

http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/oscommerce

In addition to those, you can find other payment gateways here

http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contri...ons/category,13

Some of these contributions work, and some dont. Use these at your own risk.

Best of luck.

NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit.

If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.
