How Do I Install osCommerce?

I have uploaded all the catalog files into my File Manager on my webhost, set all the permissions to 755 and I have created a dB as well, but now I cannot figure out how to install osCommerce. How exactly do I install the software? I have read the "Quick Install Guide" but it is not specific enough on how to go through with the install procedure.

Have you tried the guide written by Vger?

I too am having the same problem. I have uploaded the contents of the \catalog folder to the root of my website. I have checked the permissions on all the files and they are set to 777 so I left them like that for now. The Quick Install Guide says to go to http://my-domain.com/Install and begin the install procedure. Well, I get a 404 error "The page cannot be found".

In the osCommerce domentation guide, it says to go to http://my-domain.com/osCommerce to begin the installation. tried that. Same result.

I did not load the catalog folder itself, but out of desperation I tried http://my-domain.com/Catalog/Install . Same result.

What is it supposed to actually run from that location?

My website is on GoDaddy.com. I read in one of the messages from someone who works at GoDaddy, that osCommerce never installs right on GoDaddy. Is that true?

What am I doing wrong?

Ok. I found the answer to my problem and am posting it here so that it might help others.

osCommerce installs by running the Index.php script from the \Install folder.

The reason that the osCOmmerce install doesn't work for many on GoDaddy.com is that when you choose their Economy Hosting Plan you have to choose between a Windows Server or a Linux Server. I don't remember chosing, but I must have chosen a Windows server. When I first called customer support at GoDaddy, he told me that I am on a Windows server and that I need to be on a Linux server to be able to run PHP scripts. I found that was partially true. If you look at the following page where GoDaddy displays the various hosting plans, it becomes clear:

https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/shar...p?se=%2B&ci=260

Take a look at the "Languages Supported". If you are on the Economy Plan, then the Windows server only supports ASP and the Linux server only supports PHP. However, if you are on the Deluxe Plan, the Windows server supports ASP, PHP and ASP.NET.

So, those people who are unable to even start the installtion process, you must be on the Economy Plan, hosted on a Windows server.

You can do one of the following:

1. Have them switch you to a Economy Plan on a Linux server (your site will be unavailable for 2 days and you will lose your MySQL database if one had been created as well as you'll have to re-setup any email accounts that you created). There is no charge for this switch. Also remember that you cannot run any ASP scripts on the Linux server.

2. You can upgrade to the Deluxe Plan and stay on the Windows server (I am not sure whether you will lose your MySQL database and have to re-setup your email accounts or not).

I hope this is helpful to newbies like me. :)

What do I use for a host name when creating a MySQL database?

Do not use "localhost" as the hostname for your database-driven Web sites. Once you have successfully created a database, your host name displays on the Database Information page of your Hosting Manager.

To Find the Host Name for Your MySQL Database

Log in to your Account Manager.

Under the Hosting & Email section, select Hosting Account List.

Next to the hosting account you want to modify, click Open.

Under the Databases section of the Hosting Manager, click the MySQL icon.

From your list of databases, click the Pencil icon next to the database you want more information about.

The Database Information page displays. You will find the host name for your database on this page.
