My site has now gone live (adult shopping) and as you can see by the left hand counter i have had over 400 new hits but only have 14 customers signed up and only taken 13 orders. Would like your honest opinion where I maybe going wrong. Don't hold back if it looks rubbish then say. Many thanks to everyone on here that has helped me in the past. To goto the site CLICK HERE

Hi, just had a quick look - maybe you need to offer the customer the option to purchase without creating an account.

I noticed the product pages are in blue instead of pink - is this intentional? - I did the same thing myself, You can change this in stylesheet.css, can't remember which line but here is the oscommerce stylesheet documentation: Stylesheet Documentation.

I would also look at installing SSL on customer information pages - this could be a reason why youare not getting as many sales as you hope.

Hope this helps a little.

Regards,

Clive

Well, you have two options -

1.You could use a shared ssl many hosting providers offer that for free.

2.You could buy a dedicated (I paid ?50). Personally I would go for the dedicated.

I could go in to detail but I could get it wrong, have a look here instead: http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=151162&hl=

Would you have expected a greater conversion rate then? I don't know what is typical for the industry but I would be surprised if it was much greater than 5%.

I;m not sure that you counter is working correctly. I hit refresh and the number went up by one.

That's pretty good. Have you investigated what the conversion rate for the average ecommerce store is? It seems like a lot of people throw up sites and think that if they have 1000 visitors, 500 should make a purchase, and it's definitely not like that.

Okay, so the website is back online.

It's a stock osCommerce website.

It's a Net 1on1 drop-shipping site.

You're in competition with a zillion other sex toy selling websites - don't expect to get rich.

Truthfully its bobbins as a site, very amateurish, the logo at the top is pretty awful and is obviously resized badly, overlayed with text in a graphics package.

I have produced some for other people, its a tough market anyway, and you are going to have to do serious work to make this suitable. You will need to spend a lot of money on advertising, but this aint worth jack in this state as noone is going to buy from you as is. I have done some decent adult sites, and they would blow this away. I suggest you look at some retailers online and "copy" the feel they give..

Thanks for all your comments I know I need to change the look of the site but I find it very hard to change the look because Im bit of an amarteur on a pc.

I would like to install the quick checkout, had a go last night that's why the site was down but the instructions I had confused the crap out of me.

I know there's a lot of other sites out there but I don't want to give up that easy I think I have a domain name that is easy to remember so that's one advantage I have.

If anyone out there can offer me any more help then I would be grateful. In the meantime I would like to thank you all again for taking the time to have a look around my site.

Kind regards

Stuart

Stuart,

I think your first priority is to make it safe(SSL) for the customers you do have and try to convert sales.

Its a long development process to build an ecommerce site, you have made a start.

Yes the industry you are in is highly competitive but it doesn't mean you can't make sales.

Keep learning on every aspect of your business - it takes time to understand what your customers want.

keep at it - in no time you will look back on your site and think how did I get here?

Regards,

Clive

OK you know thats fair enough my reccommendation for people who are not very pc literate, is to go with sts contribution, and use your graphics package of choice to produce a layout for the whole page and then slice the image into sections (often part of the program, especially in paint shop, photoshop, etc). You can then make your page look like what you want, this is the quickest and easiest way to produce attractive layouts.

Have a look at top retailers such as dept stores for your country (maceys in us, debenhams, top shop) to see how they lay out their sites and get your site looking like theirs using the graphics package, this is the simples way to produce a professional design.

Sorry if I seem harsh, you can make money in this business, but you need to look professional, show youare (SSL, no regsitering for accounts, and preferably a merchant account or paypal pro), and then advertise, I reccommend spending min ?100 month on advertising, absolute minimum...

You should also add an image contribution as it would help because the pop ups are to small.

( WARNING )

I think I know what Im talking about.

Hi

As well as the logo and other things mentioned....

I love pink... but I wouldn't use pink to sell sex.

Pink just doesn't sell sex.... it's just too soft and fluffy....

Pink = Babies and other soft and fluffy things .....

Perhaps in a one-to-one situation pink is great... but on a mass media website, the connection to pink and sex is just not there....

Pink would turn men off....too girly

And women would think about babies....

(Oh wow...My first post and I'm talking about sex..)

I think the site needs to be a little bit harder... to appeal to both women and men

The picture of the man and woman is ok.... but because the logo has so many images of underwear...my first impression was lingerie.... not a sex store at all.

As a woman.... I hope this helps

Hi Amy and welcome to the forum, I am looking at a complete new look to the site but first have to sort out the error I'm starting to get on the create a logging page. I knew I should have left the site alone it was working fine till I touched it. I think you are right on the colour scheme what would you suggest?

Hope nobodies mentioned it......

On the 'Welcome, Please Sign In ' page its says 'create a password' in the returning customer box.

Returning customers dont need to create one.

Im not an os or e commerce anything! but id say you'd have to include the customer more. You basically have a site with lots of products ready to sell.

Look at other adult sites, see how they make offers to customers, list the plus points of shopping with you. You need the customer to be softened up by things other than what you sell.

Yuo know you said you have had 1000 visitors and 14 sales, do you know what is 'normal' or what the ratio is for popular adult stores?

I would be interested too.

My site pulls around 1 sale per thirty unique visitors from the data provided by my host.

I think my site is crap but it is an extension of what we do, I am happy to do ongoing work on it and develop it.

If it was core business then I would agree it has to look right and needs advertising.

Im just not convinced that you can put a site up these days and expect to make much from it unless it is a unique product, though I do think that every business should have a site of some sort.

Returns policy.....How can you tell if an item is unused? ....Shudder!

Personally I would rather buy from a site which doesnt accept returns unless faulty, with products of this nature.

The items that we sell are all sealed so we would know that they have been used. All adult stores that I know of offer returns.

:) Regarding the comment regarding used items. It's a great thing your items are sealed there is a major intimate brand apparal catalog store that I used to work for who accepted ALL returns and did some kind of cleaning to the items this included bathing suits and other apparel.

I think stores should some sort of return policy and having sealed products for this type of business is the best idea.

Regarding your layout though, I don't like the graphic you have in the header because it has what is called a "halo" around it. As if someone tried to erase the original background and now it has these scraggly edges. If the original background was white maybe you can find a new way to design your header so that this image is against a white background or one that matches the header backgrount. It makes for a more professional look.

I love the pink color scheme. Have you thought of further integrating the color with your site graphics such as the stars in the review box. That's not to say that everything should be pink. But what I like to do is start off with a three to four color palette and make everything go with that. It give your site more consistency rather than going with default image colors.

Best of luck to you!

Hi,

It might not be related to your conversion rate, but there seems to be a typo in your tag line (disceet?). Also, changing the page title to something other than osCommerce would give it a more professional touch.

Cheers,

Michael

I agree with whomever said the color pink is too...something. Too frilly? Too nice? You're not selling 'nice'...you're selling sex.

And, maybe I read this thread too fast, but...did anyone point out the HUGE misspelling in the logo?

Please change the word DISCEET to DISCREET

And it's NOT discreet if you don't have a SSL certificate.

You have a 3.25% conversion rate- Quite frankly I'm supprised that site produced that many sales at all. Even some of the best sites don't experience that sort of conversion rate.

Everybody in this thread made valid points- follow what they said.

My advice comes in two flavors- Pick the one that won't offend you.
