Hi,

After spending days trying to find a decent program to use I decided to give OScommerce a go.

Thing is I have no idea what you do with the downloaded files.

The documentation doesn't make any sense, ive uploaded the catalog folder but then what. It just goes on about upload the catalog folder and the root directory upload catalog but copy admin blah blah blah

I really dont get the instructions.

Why cant you just install it like any other program?

Also all the files ive uploaded I cant delete.... :(

Any help would be great,

Many Thanks

Rik

I'd recommend reading the Quick Install Guide link below my name. The other link is for installing MS3 and there are differences to MS2 which would confuse someone new to osCommerce.

Have you read this?

http://www.oscommerce.info/kb/osCommerce/I...nd_Upgrades/225

It's not hard at all, once you've done it you'll wonder why you ever thought it was difficult.

Hi,

many thanks for the link. I hadn't seen those instructions before!

It says I have to do the pre installation procedure first, which is the bit I dont get.

What do you upload? the catalog folder or the contents of the catalog folder. Where do I upload it to? Do you put it in one of the following

/home/hpdl/public_html/

/srv/www/htdocs/

/usr/local/htdocs/

Ive now uploaded this 9 times and I cant delete any of the files. Could this stop it from working? Ive just got the cataog folder in the root directory 9 times.

In fact, sod it, I give up.

I too am a bit confused by the installation instructions, but not to the point of giving up !

The part I don't seem to understand in the manual is the bit about the uploading the catalog and admin folders to the root directory. I've got the first part totally right that i'm sure of my files are in mt htpdocs/catolog/admin this must be correct right ? then what ? I can't seem to follow the manual after that bit as if I skip over the 'root directory installation' which i don't need it begins to talk about an /install/ ; should I assume that I should be uploading all the files i download ?! BTW my ips huyhn.de supports oscommerce and my server is supposed to be compliant so i just need a few simple pointers to get this right.

Thanks for the help.

I too am a newbie - but maybe Newbie 201 or 301. I got the files uploaded, installed, etc. however, from thereon, it's been a very frustrating experience!

I attempted to do this on MY site (a very basic website - SSL but not set up for ecommerce), so reinstalled it on my client's site - a full ecommerce site. I know, I know, shouldn't make a difference, as long as there's SSL available. At any rate, I'm having even MORE problems, if you can imagine with the new install, than with the other one! I'm going to populate the catalog with a few items within the next couple hours, then I want someone to go to https:www.thegatheringbook.com/catalog and try to create an account (fake is ok), put something in the basket, and click checkout. I've done this over and over and over, and a variety of things happen:

97% of the time, it bounces me to the MAIN page that says "welcome guest" (this is AFTER I got "welcome gina" after I logged in

1% of the time it bounces me to the login page

1% of the time it takes me to the next step - shipping

1% of the time, it bounces me to either the main page or the login page, or says I have nothing in my shopping cart, inspite of the fact that when I clicked checkout there were 3-4 items in it!

From that point on, chaos. Authorize.net will be my client's cc processor, that module's clicked as active in the admin area - though I'm not sure if I have to install the 'newer' module here on the site - what's it called...authorize.net consolidated 1.8. I am getting to the point where I'm about ready to tell my client that he should find someone who's not so stupid and can better do his site - it's my discouragement talking, I know, but dang! I've been working on this for three days, and can never get past first base (or even TO first base).

when installed, SSL was checked, something about search URL's is off in admin, all things are off in sessions (as recommended by someone) - I just can't figure out what the H*LL I'm doing wrong. Anyone? Please, someone go there, register and see what I'm saying is true. Of course, if a TRUE webmaster goes there, it'll probably work, if nothing else, but out of consideration!

heh, at least I found some consistency to the error...when I login, first of all, it won't log me in anymore, just keeps saying "welcome guest" - when I go to checkout, it bounces me to login, wherein I login, and get bounced back to main page saying 'welcome guest' - I have tried, and tried, and tried and tried MILLIONS of times to login - even creating accounts to login, and nothing works :( HELP!

One more thing...if someone will go to www.swdconsultling.com/catalog; sign in as [email protected] (fake name) and put something in the shopping cart, then click on checkout, they'll get bounced back to the signon page. I got this 8 times

Cheers

oops, now try it. I was in the process of reinstalling it - for the 3rd time. I'm populating it NOW (12:30 a.m. eastern time) and am going to try it again. Can you try again after 1 a.m. eastern, please? Tomorrow is ok, too :)

OK, got the site up, and...well, it's not working, or I wouldn't be posting here.

Created a user name as jane doe - [email protected], password apple. The first time after I signed in and at least this time it SAID 'welcome Jane!" (usually it bounces back to welcome guest :() First time I put something in the cart, and tried to hit checkout, it said 'nothing in cart' - 2nd time it bounced me back to sign-in page. 3rd time, I logged in, put something in the shopping cart, and it bounced me back to sign in page (even though it acknowledges 'hi jane!" - which means I'm logged in.

I have it on a unix server that has several oscommerce sites on it working like a charm. I'm wondering if I should tell my client to find someone less stupid to do his site, and rebate him the money he's already paid me :( I know, this is my depression - and desperation talking, but I'm about ready to chuck it all. I cannot get it to work no matter how many times I install it, how many times I reconfigure it, how many times I try to login and ...GRRRRRRRRRR@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Couldn't find an appropriate smiley below - all are too happy

Yep, those are set

i believe you have a configure.php file error in the catalog/admin/includes/configure.php

What kind of file error do you mean? I looked at the file, and it seems to be correct in all ways. I can post here (minus the db name and password) the contents of the file:

you'll just have to trust me that the last few lines defining the db connection are correct - since I did get 'connect to db successful!" and it looks right, as well...I don't want to give away all my secrets <G>

Seriously, do you see an error there?

OK, I gave it another try this morning.

I uploaded the catalog file to my root directory, set the permissions and went to my address (www.apby14.dsl.pipex.com/install) but it says

Page not found

If I go to www.apby14.dsl.pipex.com/catalog/install it says

No index for this site

How can I go so wrong when all I have to do is upload a folder?

These instructions have a cgi-bin folder and a index.html in the root

http://www.b2services.com/tutorial/osc_install.htm

Do I need this? Ive tried it and it still doesnt work

I had good luck with the initial installation because I watched the Flash install notes offered by my host. You can find them here:

http://www.hostdepartment.com/flash_tutorials.htm

I just went through each one step by step and paused the play as I did each step. It worked great except there are a few customization things that aren't explained. But for basic install, it was a life saver.

OK, if you bear with me, I wrote down a series of steps I took and what happened when I took them

1. I choose 'login' and use [email protected] as username and apple as password.

2. I get to main page of cat saying "hi jane!" I see there are items in cart

so click on checkout

3. I get bounced to login screen, login and go to screen that says "delivery information"

4. I click on continue and get to page where you put your credit card number in.

I put in 'testing' for credit card owner (under authorize.net) and 4111111111111111 for

credit card number, and expiry date of january 2010 (for yucks).

5. I click continue and get to order confirmation page.

The 2nd time I tried, I never got beyond the shipping page, and everytime I hit checkout and continue on the shipping page, it bounced me back to signon page. It took 4 tries, the 2nd time I tried, to login! Note that between tries, I QUIT IE6 and rebooted IE6. I even killed the cache.

As of 3 a.m., the www.thegatheringbook.com/catalog is down. I'm going to try to reinstall - for the 5th time. Someone said it was my domain name that was the problem????? (Mibble said that). What's wrong with the domain name? At anyrate, if anyone wants to try their luck, use www.swdconsulting.com/catalog. That's still up and not running right

If you tried that within the last hour, yes it worked. Puzzles never cease to confound me. After about the 8th install, it suddenly started working just fine!
