Changing homepage text and Non-permission to write to this file error.

I would like to know how do I go about changing my text on my homepage and eliminating the sample text that's there. I am starting to stock my site with inventory and I need to input my own text and so forth. I also would like to know how to I change permissions so I can write to particular files. When I'm in my file manager each file i click on to edit it says at top of page I cannot write to this file please set the right user permissions. I'm confused on how to do that. I'd appreciate if someone could help me. i have oscommerce version (2.2 MS2)
