Admin Security

I just took over maintaining an existing site - my concern is that the admin page is NOT secured...I can just use [website]\admin and access without user name and password.

 

There is a .htaccess file but I'm not familiar with how it works.

 

Advice on what to look for or what might be missing?

use your host's cpanel and create a password for this directory.
