Using shared SSL with accounts

If you have access to a shared SSL, and it points to the same directory, then by all means use it!

Advantages: by using a shared SSL in your configure.php file, and turning SECURE mode to TRUE, it will automatically go secure whenever someone is logging out, logging in (depending on how you have your store setup) during checkout, and whenever they go to edit their account info.

Customers will get scared away sometimes if they go to purchase or enter personal info or billing info without the site being secure.

If your host has the shared SSL setup properly, it should be accessing your store from the same folder where you uploaded oscommerce to...even though the URL may look different in secure mode.

Example:

unsecure shared hosting account:

http://www.mysite.com/catalog/

secure shared hosting with shared ssl:

https://secure.servername.com/mysite/catalog/

Basically if setup properly, a hosting company will purchase the SSL and attach it to the main domain and server name for the server. By using this method, it allows every customer on there, whether they realize it or not, to hit their site securely by entering:

https://secure.servername.com/theirsite/

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Bruce

Its apparent that the HOST by your definition has not got this setup correctly, I only have a directory at the root of my server which is my shared SSL directory... is it still possible to use this ???

* Make a note of the FTP Username, and FTP Host Address.

* Change the password if required

* Launch your FTP client and enter the details necessary to connect to the SSL folder

Note: These entries are completely different to those required to connect to your main website so you will need to create a new FTP connection.

* Use FTP to upload your files.

When the files have been uploaded to the SSL folder you can access them using the following URL:

https://secured-url.com/<your-ssl-folder-name>

E.g - for the SSL folder shown in the example above)

https://secured-url.com/secured-url

The domain secured-url.com is the one used by Fasthosts for its shared ssl. This shared ssl will not work with osCommerce, so don't shell out ?45 for it.
