Categories/Products won't delete

Please can someone help,

 

I've set up osCommerce and I'm having difficulties within the Catalog area of the admin section.

 

Initially, I wanted to delete out the standard products that come with osComms, yet it wouldn't let me delete the 3 main categories. If I went into the main category & deleted the sub-categories then went back to the main categories once it was empty, it would allow me to delete them.

 

Once I had cleared out all the products and categories, then tried adding categories it wouldn't let me add them.

 

I can add products into 'Top' yet now cannot delete them?!

 

This all seems very inconsistent, can anyone help?
