enigmatix Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Hi.. im totally new to this and want to say Hi to all first. I have chosen open source due to it being cheap and helpful. Now here are some questsion - please forgive me if they sound stupid.. 1. To install do i need a hosting company ? or some webspace to install it to? Since im new to it I just wanted to test it on my machine instead of wasting money on webspace/hosting to upload and then mess around etc etc.
mickotoole Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Hey, first of all you will have to have a hosting company that supports php pages. I'm pretty sure that webspace won't be sufficient for this. Also if you want people to be able to complete transactions using osCommerce you will have to have SSL enabled (once again your hosting company can provide this for you) Hope that helps.
batteryrat Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 sorry mike but you are incorrect in sayin you need a isp first first of all you can install php mysql on your local drive to test drive there is a site hyperlink i keep for ref i will post it for ya as soon as i can get on my server wont be long! enigmatix Posted September 21, 2005 Author Posted September 21, 2005 sorry mike but you are incorrect in sayin you need a isp first first of all you can install php mysql on your local drive to test drive there is a site hyperlink i keep for ref i will post it for ya as soon as i can get on my server wont be long! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ok thanks.. i would rather set this up on my machine first.. before wasting time on paying for hosting webspace - however I am on ntl and i do remember they give free webspace but have currently lost my user/pass. Ideally i would like it on my machine first then upload when ready.
mickotoole Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Well if you are testing it locally then you will need to install a local webserver that supports php. Granted you can install it to your PC and look at the php pages individually but you can't check out the functionality of it by installing it on your PC.
batteryrat Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 why not i can mike what is limiting you on the localhost? Vertical Climb watch me loose grip an plumit!!

experts Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Hi there, I am newer than a newbie  , if you can kindly help me... I have uploaded oscommerce and started to install, then i got a message saying: /install/oscommerce.sql does not exist I checked my uploaded files and found oscommerce.sql existing in Catalog/install, but actually there is no oscommerce_sample_data.sql file ! What is the problem? Do i have to build a database, name it oscommerce.sql and place it somewhere (i have already built a database but with another name) ? Pls help, Thanx
♥Vger Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Check that your folder permissions are correct - read the Quick Install Guide link below my name. Vger
