Solid download system

I'm running a music download store and I've been told by others that since I'm using osCommerce that there are some serious bugs. I have set it up and it works fine most of the time but I'm VERY concerned that our reputation is at stake.

 

I started searching around the forums here and I just can't be sure what issues are relevant and if I'm finding everything. There are 60 pages of threads that mention download and the search results limited to first 1000.

 

Is there a place I can read about all the issues in one place? If not, perhaps this thread can be used to compile links to essential thread and other issues.

 

Here're a few main issues that I know about:

 

- Something is wrong with the redirect method. I was told by someone in the UK to turn this off or fix it. I'm not sure why. Something to do with files downloading wrong.

 

- People are complaining that the files show up as temp without an extension. They then have to rename the file and add the extension! This may have been part of the redirect method.

 

- In both my personal experiences and reports from customers, clicking on the download sometimes jumped to a blank page and didn't supply a file download OR just didn't do anything. In these cases, the # of downloads was decremented and no page refresh occurred so the user doesn't know that they are running out of downloads.

 

I am ready to hand-code every change/fix needed and can figure it out myself. The problem is that I don't have the resources to identify all the problems. It is essential that I get this working smoothly.

Do you have the Downloads Controller contribution installed. You can't use the stock Downloads Controller for selling items since it won;t protect them. The above contribuiton does a good job although there was a thread on here not to long ago about how it was possible to hack it. You should ask in the support thread for that contributionto be sure. You are more likely to reach people who actually use it by doing that.

I started looking into the Downloads Controller and found that what it does, I've already done to my own code. The threads are really long and I'm not sure if it's going to help to add to those. Can anyone help me simplify this process? I've already spent hours reading though this stuff.
