SSL, virtual hosting, and oscommerce

I find it hard to believe that hosting companies offering SSL have an IP address for every one of their customers, but I have also heard that SSL does not work using name-based virtual hosting. Does this mean that they do, in fact, have an ip address for every customer?

I have a static IP address. My router sends all incoming requests to my Suse Linux server. If I can generate my own key and certificate, then I am not concered whether or not it is trusted, only that the encryption works. Since I only have one static IP address, I use name-based virtual hosting. I have approximately 5 sites and I want to protect a couple of them with SSL. Is this even remotely possible?

The 5 sites each are stored in the public_html directory of each username. My goal is to be able to secure each one. Any ideas??

On a shared server any site with a full ssl cert of its own has to have its own dedicated ip address.

Shared SSL works because it is usually a cert issued in the name of the domain the server runs on, which has its own ip address.

I am not concered whether or not it is trusted

Your customers would be. Getting a warning message onscreen that the certificate is not trusted will turn most people away.

If you have your own server running on its own dedicated ip address then you should be able to buy a cert for the server, and then offer the shared ssl using a 'Trusted' certificate.

This is really all about how to run your own dedicated server and not really anything directly to do with osCommerce. There are specialist forums for running your own dedicated servers, and I'd suggest you're better off doing a Google search for some of them.

However, I will say this - if you are trying to run a dedicated server without a good Administrator Control Panel then it's going to be very hard work. Usually you have the option of which Control Panel System to have on your dedicated server (Ensim, cPanel etc) and they come with Server Administrator, Reseller, and Site Administrator options.
