My Press Release worked

Just thought I'd share with you all that I went through the painstaking processing of writing a press release when I opened 7 weeks ago. I admit it was hard to come up with a "catch" that would make my internet store, amongst millions out there, seem interesting. But I forced myself to do it anyway, and I just got a call from a small, local LA paper that has decided to interview me and carry a short story on my store.

Woohoo! Putting in effort actually works sometimes. :D

Excited,

Adrienne

Really interesting. I know about *edit* (hope I got that right) but I have not tried anything else. How did you go about publishing your subscription?

Kym, I hadn't seen that site before - it looks very interesting, thanks.

I found some PR writing guidelines online - they seem to be slightly different depending on whether you are e-mailing or faxing. Then I wrote one and sent it (mostly via e-mail) to my target magazines. (I carry a specialty line, so I didn't just send it every where.) So far, none of the mags have replied. But I also sent a slight variation to my local newspapers as a "local interest" type story. I was hoping to get picked up by the LA Times, which hasn't happened, but the Daily Breeze, a smaller LA community paper is picking it up. I think they still have a pretty hefty readership, though.

So even though it's not directly my target market, I'll happily settle for the local interest story. I'm being interviewed next Wednesday and the article should be in the paper the following Monday, hopefully with some pictures of my products. The paper has a website, but I don't know if it will be linked or not. I'll ask during the interview.

The big thing is that even though this is only a small success, I find myself motivated to write another PR. Obviously someone, somewhere is looking at them, so I just need to keep trying.

Cheers,

Adrienne

Yes, that's what's been working for me. And even the ones that don't pick up initially, you should still keep sending the releases to. If they see you're constantly doing interesting things, and that you're in it for the long haul instead of some fly-by-night internet company, they'll eventually give you press.

*edit* I had not heard of it, either. Really very nice clean system. I posted my own press release. When you sign up they invite you to a teleseminar, that I took this morning. They give you details on how to work the system, not too much on press releases, though. I like the different levels from free to much more. They also mentioned that monthly press releases are very effective as part of an overall campaign.

You can break out your pr by MSA ( Metro Statistical Areas) that would, I hope, a have a good impact in smaller markets...we will see.

I am of the opinion that every little bit helps, thanks for sharing.

Is there any fast way of working out who to inundate with a Press Release? As in an easy way to make a list of magazines?

hello

i have not done a press release as yet, so was amazed when i got an email from the ES magazine asking if i can send them some images of the products i sell, As they are running a few pages on the 18th nov featuring baby products for christmas presents, and would like to add my site : )

Not many of you would have heard of the ES magazine, it comes free with the Evening standard newspaper on a friday and has details of where to shop and go, its sold in london and sells a few million copies.

To be trueful i am a little shocked i was pick as i did not think my site was even that good, ( well not as good as all the big boys sites ) but the magazine writer liked it so i guess that what counts.

What i would love to know is will this really get my site noticed or more sales, has anyone had the same thing done to them and if so did they seen any improvement.

Also should i milk it for every gram and add the clippings to my site to add a little more volume ?

kind regards

Anything selling a million copies is bound to bring traffic and sales to your site. When I recieved a write up in MacWorld Magazine, it brought me to the attention of not only potential customers, but other customers as well as a few potential investors who liked my idea.

I would definitely milk it, the more press you get, it seems the more other people will want to write about you. I have a "Press" page on my site which lists, you guessed it... all the press that the site has so far received....

Mediajungle, I have a couple questions for you. I was thinking about adding a "Press" link to my site as well, but as of now, I only have that single press article. Should I wait until I get a bit more to make it beefier, or do you think the single article is worth the page?

Also, the printed article was awesome with a 1/2 page picture on the front of the newspapers Business section. But the online version is just text, and I can't get copies of the pictures to post. I could however scan the paper. Should I just put up the text of the article or does a scanned version of the paper with pictures sound like a good idea?

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks,

Adrienne

Why wait? You have to get the ball rolling somehow?

Scanned images will increase the download size of your page. What I would do is place the text on page and then offer them a link to click if they actually want to see the printed article. Place the cover of the the magazine/newspaper and then the actual article. You can make the scans big enough so that they can read the headline and not have to worry about the actual printed text because it will already be on your site.

Also, what I did when i sent out my press releases is:

at the very top of the page on right hand side i put the heading "PREVIOUS PRESS" and list the press that I had already recieved. Note this is not the standard way of doing a press release but I want whoever gets my release to see right off the bat that others are already reporting on my site, that this story is newsworthy.

overall not great but it was free and not really a magazine i would choose to place an ad in, but saying that it was a christmas present catalog, so hopefully some would have keeped it and will look at it again before xmas.
