Why cant I change normal text on the index page for my homepage without getting these parse errors?!

Posted

Update: I am changing the test from the homepage in the file manager box and get a parse error, however if I type the text from the php file in dreamweaver and then paste it into the file manager box this works. Any idea why I'm having to do it this way and what I can do to fix this problem?!

are you reffering to the stock text on the index.php page?

Its the text just directly below the 'Welcome Guest! Would you like to log yourself in? Or would you prefer to create an account?'

If I want to change that text I get a parse error but if I type it in dreamweaver and paste it in it works fine

Do NOT use the File Manager to update files. Save your files using Dreamweaver, then upload using FTP.

Thanks mate, is there any reason for this?

Also, is there a way to get your pages showing like they do online visually instead of just php scripts?

I have my FTP and everything set up, but I cant get it looking like it does online...

About the File Manager problem:

The only way to see your files as they will be is to set up a testing environment so you can see changes before they go live. You can set this up on your home computer, or as a second testing area on your host. PHP is a server-side language, and so is not rendered by the browser. It often relies on many variables being passed in (for example, the product_info.php page is the same code for all products, but it 'knows' which product to display if there is a product_id passed in to the script from the referring page.)
