Why SSL

Is there any good reason to run the catalog in secure mode, if the CC details are handled off-site by PayPal and the admin is secured both by .htaccess and runs within a secure server

I am trying to speed things up a bit.

in germany I think nobody would by in a shop without minimum a class2 cert. and most even point with a special privacy/security-advice well placed in header e.g. to point to a page that explains and links all issues within this domain. makes customers fell condifdent

Not having an ssl cert, either shared or full, shows that you really don't care about the security of information that customers pass to you. So why then should they give you their money. Information sent via the Create Account, My Account, Account Edit, Login etc are all sent unencrypted if ssl is not used and open to any hacker to intercept midstream.

And, it shows that your company is very small, and probably a startup, lending even less confidence to the customer about purchasing from you.

After all, if you can't afford $50 per year, you must really be on a tight budget.

Thank you all for your replies, I am on a shared certificate at the mo and was looking at ways of speeding the store up, by possibly taking the catalogue off the SSL

In light of Vger's post re the details I will leave as it is
