Performance issue: problem with over 6000 products

Dear All -

 

I have a website with over 6000 products, running in a shared server. In most cases the website is locked by the server after I add some new products. The host says that there is a limitation of about 5000 concurrent database access in the server and my website exceeds the limitation. At the time the website was locked, there were about 60 people browsing my website. I know the top peak was 120 people.

 

Could anyone give me some advices? Why does it happen? What should I check or imporve?

or my guess - move to self-hosting or a dedicated server. search on google for sites providing dedicated servers.

Moving to a dedicated server would ease the problem. But I would like to know what causes the problem.

 

Too many products? osCommerce can't support over 6000 products?

 

Using shared server? Why only my website was locked while the other websites that are in the server weren't? Notice that my website wasn't locked in the peak time.

 

Adding new products causes lots of the access to database?

 

Any suggestion is highly appreciated.

The problem is 2 things.

 

1. in standard osc there is an exorborant amount of queries per page... there are solutions available for MS-2 in the contributions section.

2. Cheap hosts arent always best.
