Light_bulb_licker Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Hi, I've been live for a few months now but only just discovered these forums. I'd appreciate any constructive feedback on the functionality and aesthetics of my site The Bridge Shop. I'm particularly interested in which contributions, if any, would benefit my store. thanks. nick sydney
K3D Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 Header Tags Controller Any of the thumbnail contributions. Remove the number of requests footer and try to lose some of the stock oscommerce look (the Whats new here?, rounded corners on infoboxes). Browsing your categories menu is nigh on impossible. I would consider expanding the left column to accomodate the long product names a bit better. regards kev
Light_bulb_licker Posted September 11, 2005 Author Posted September 11, 2005 thanks for the contructive criticism kev - all good points. However, is it really a negative feature to retain a stock osCommerce look - i mean will it really me poorly perceived by those visitors who count ? ie prospective customers? Also, when you say "Browsing your categories menu is nigh on impossible."...what do you mean? are there toomany branches or levels in the categories tree or is it simply related to your further comment that the product names are too long? thanks again. nick sydney
K3D Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 Also, when you say "Browsing your categories menu is nigh on impossible."...what do you mean? are there toomany branches or levels in the categories tree or is it simply related to your further comment that the product names are too long? Its because once you open up a category (for example club & home supplies) you just cannot tell where categories or sub categories are, this is mainly due to the wrapping problem and perhaps due to there being no indicators (bullets) or consistant indents in the list.
K3D Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 I downloaded the webpage so that I could edit the left column size in html, and it works out that you need a column size of at least 185px to stop most of the wrapping on the left column.
niknakgroup Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 I noticed in your footer you have "customised by phpworkshop.net" - please tell me you didnt pay them for this, as I could see very little except text which made it any different to a stock osc store. As for is this a bad thing....no, so long as you dont mind your customers forgetting your site in a heartbeat after they have visited. A customised store builds a brand, and aids customers when they are next looking for your type of product in remembering that you supplied it and what your url was. Thousands and thousands of sites exist which are "stock osc" and a simple log change is not enough to make your site stand out from the crowd. You definitely need a thumbnailer contrib, and some seo work doing in the form of header tags and possibly also a mod_rewrite address contrib such as Ultimate SEO URL's I would personally go and have a look int he knowledge base and teach yourself some css skills - a few minutes tweaking the css will give you an individual look to your site. Please note - if I have suggested a contrib above, it doesnt mean it will work! Most of the contribs are not ones I've used, but may be useful for your particular problem.... Have you tried a refined search? Chances are your problem has already been dealt with elsewhere on the forums..... if (stumped == true) { return(square_one($start_over) } else { $random_query = tep_fetch_answer($forum_query) }
