Mediajuggle
Nothing has the ability to destroy a small ecommerce setup than phishing. WHile big companies like eBay and Amazon can take a few hits and still come out on top, this has the potential to totally ruin the reputation and business of smaller retailers. Seeing as how Oscommerce sends links in it's order emails by default. I'm curious to know what some of you who are running your stores doing to protect yourselves against this latest threat.... YoungBlood
Are you talking about phishing traffic? Or phishing web sites? I am interested where this post goes, so I would like to get this cleared up. I think the best way to prevent these things from happening is in encryption, but I am not an expert on this. Good post by the way.
Mediajuggle
I'm referring more to the phishing websites and the emails which lure customers to those sites. They had a great article in the new issue of Practical Ecommerce about this. One guy signed up with a service that lets him know when someone is duplicating the contents of his site (i think thats how it works. I'd have too refer back to the article). But it seems like a constant struggle. I get these emails all the time for Ebay and Paypal but I didn't think they were striking the smaller retailers as well. I know that most of us can't afford to have our customers scammed in such a way so I wonder how some of the retailers on this site are setting up their preventive measures. Chance
The burden is on the consumer to check their address bar and see if they are actualy at your site. If someone else rips off your customers pretending to be you, its not your fault legaly or moraly if they redirect your customers to another server out of your control. You can give your customers friendly reminders like companies like Paypal do- Remind them that they should only enter their login and password on https:// pages, etc. My advice comes in two flavors- Pick the one that won't offend you. As I stated in my letter (which you printed) I felt the earlier issues were too Miva oriented. PS: In a couple of months, I might have a really big story for you guys...
