Your web host should have a link in their control panel somewhere to password protect a directory. This is the easiest way to do it if you are unfamiliar with htaccess. So just use them to password protect the admin folder. :)

thanks ........ i host on a vds, and there's no such link.......

i've read things about creating a htaccess file, but am confused.

could someone provide a brief explanation.

i've tried to figure this out on my own and it's not working.

I had the same problem. My instructions told me to go to mydomainname.com/catalog and log in. This is actually

incorrect.

You need to go to mydomainname.com/catalog/admin

and log in.

This is your control panel where you set up most of your

settings.

Good Luck!

Just do a Google search for 'writing .htaccess files' and you'll come up with tons of hits. There are some sites that will do the writing for you.

By the way, just because you use a VDS doesn't mean you don't have the ability to password protect a folder from your hosting control panel. In addition to the servers I use I also have a VDS account I use to run off-site backups to, and the control panel for that has add-ons you can install and one of them is for password protection.

Believe it or not one of the best and easiest sites I found explaining htacces and encrypting the password for the password file is ilovejackdanieles.com lol

thanks Vger + wj, I've spent two days, and I still can't get this right.

Basically, I used wordpad to create a .htaccess and a .htpasswd.

The .htaccess file looks like this:

AuthName "Catalog Admin"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile .htpasswd
Require valid-user

I know this is dumb putting the .htpasswd on the same level, but i was testing it out, and, also, not sure about how to put it on a level above the root as recommended.

I generated an encrypted pw at kxs.net, which someone else recommended.

i uploaded everything.

i go to domainname/catalog/admin and the prompt comes up for Catalog Admin un and pw. I enter info, and it tells me it's not correct.

Please help.
