UPS Module - need clarification

I have the UPS module installed from the osCommerce default application, but is this a guide to the numbers, the real thing or do I have to get a module from UPS to get the correct pricing for shipping? I hope this doesn't sound flippant, but how do I track any changes in the UPS shipping costs, in this volatile time of pricing (ie gas prices going up etc.)
