Have you set the File Attributes correctly and put in the file name exactly as it is in your downloads folder?

You should have a folder called download in the Catalog folder. I meant to ask if you have download set to enabled. When you set the products attributes there there should be a panel for you to put the filename into. It will also tell you how many days for your customer has to get their download and how many times they can get it. If none of that is there then you haven't set your download configuration yet.

The folder named catalog is where the oscommerce program sets itself up in and every file associated with it is in there. (Normally)

No you don't need to edit any PHP files. Just check where your download folder is exactly and all the other files. The catalog folder should be in the root directory if not then you will need to do editing to some PHP files.
