Is local installation possible?

Hi Y'all,

I'm new to osCommerce and I need to integrate it into a website. This may be a dumb question, but is it possible to install the entire package on my PC so I can configure and test/debug everything before I actually upload it to the internet? How do I do that? I assume I need some kind of php software, right?

Thanks for the help,

Ed

download and install xampp www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html (free) This gives you apache server, php, mysql and a raft of other useful stuff!

You'll also want a php editor try php designer 2005 (free)

A file compare program is handy (essential even) too try Beyond compare scootersoftware.com (it's excellent, 30 day trial $30 to buy) or file comparer http://www.script-debugger.com/products/ (free but not so funky)

Thanks for the quick response. I guess without the the xampp there's not a lot that I can do. Since I live way out in the boondocks, downloading 50 or so MB on a crappy dial-up is going to be a challenge if not impossible. I get disconnected too many times during dowloads. Is this xampp thingy available on CD?

May I ask why we need a file compare program? I am new here too, I just download the oscommerce a week ago, and I am in configuration stage.

For me, I also use XAMPP, and phpmyadmin for database.

I don't know esm need phpmyadmin, but I do need it when I install my oscommerce.

If you later want to get phpmyadmin, please goto this website

I use easyphp from easyphp.org :)

The compair program helps when editing files. Sometimes instructions tell you to compair one page to another and this program helps point out eh differences. Can come in very handy when adding contributions.

To break up your download do the following. It's not as easy to install as Xampp but it is faster than an Apache server when installed - and you install it in bits.

Download and install Xitami Web Server from here: http://www.xitami.com/download.htm

It's only a couple of Megabytes. Install this before you install anything else.

Download and install PHP (4.3.11 recommended) here (about 1 Meg):

http://uk.php.net/get/php-4.3.11-installer.exe/from/a/mirror

Then download and install MySQL (http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/4.0.html) - afraid this is 25 Megs. You can look for a Lite version if there's one available.

Then download and install phpMyAdmin (http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/index.php) - about 3 Megs.

Trust me, a compare program is like a mobile (cell) phone, once you've got it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!

And as you learn more, you'll find more uses for it. As it costs you nothing, i'd recommend you get one (but don't buy one!).

eam,

if you can't download xampp (lite), what about getting a friend to download it for you, burn it to CD and post it to you?

I installed the file comparer, obviously it does compare two php code left and right.

I am still in the beginning stage of osCommerce configuration , so, I haven't got the chance to use it now. Probably will use it later.... : )

Hi all. I installed xampp on my computer and transferred everything to it from my site, but when i go to localhost/catalog, it gives me this error message:

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Access denied for user 'greatgif'@'localhost' (using password: YES) in C:\Program Files\xampp\htdocs\catalog\includes\functions\database.php on line 19

Unable to connect to database server!

What did I do wrong?

Thanks

  • 4 weeks later...

Okay, I finally could download XAMPP and install it.

Now what? As I had mentioned before, I'm totally new to this and I am struggling to connect XAMPP and osCommerce.

I have ftp'd an entire website that uses osCommerce onto my PC and now I need to maintain and update this site but I have no idea how to open the admin window and change catalog etc.

Can someone help without giggling too much?

Thanks,

Ed

You need to transfer all of your folders and files into a folder you create in xampp/htdocs/ (no need to create a folder if your online website is already in one e.g. 'catalog').

Then, go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin and create a blank database.

Download a backup of your online database, go to phpmyadmin again, click the SQL tab, and use the Browse function to locate the sql file you downloaded, then click 'Go'

Then you edit the two configure.php files and you're good to go.

Thanks,

I created a blank database and when I click on MySQL it asks me for the location of the text file. Which text file is that?

Re the two configure.php files, where are they and what am I supposed to edit?

The text file is the .sql file - which is the backup of your database you downloaded from your website.

The two configure.php files are in:

catalog/includes/configure.php

/catalog/admin/includes/configure.php

'catalog' being the name of the folder in xampp/htdocs/ that you put all of your site files/folders in.

I'm sorry to appear dense but there is no file with an .sql extension in my download.

It won't be in a download of your folders/files. You need to go to your online osCommerce admin control panel, go to Tools --> Backup, and take a backup (by download) of your database (no compression). This will be the sql file.

Okay, I was under the impression that, when I ftp the entire website, the database would be included. Aparently that's not the case.

I have similar issues as above, I have managed to get .sql database into my local admin.php but how exactly do I transfer my entire catalog folder to my localhost. (

xampp/htdocs/)

thanks

What if the admin/backups/ folder is empty?

You download it via FTP.

Vger

I must be thick :-" . Vger, how (step by step) do I "FTP" my catalog contents from my website to my pc hard drive. As you have probably guessed i dont have a clue about FTP, where is FTP? Also, when you finally have your catalog files on your pc and the sql data base how do you load the actual site?

thanks.

To FTP files you need an FTP programme. There is a 30 day trial version of WS FTP Home available from ipswitch.com - so download and install that. There's a link to tutorials which tells you how to set up an ftp connection to your website - use that.

Once you have the catalog folder with all its files loaded into the xampp/htdcos folder, then follow my earlier advice in this thread to get it up and running.

Vger, the other guy should have opened his own thread, this is getting mixed up.

I have ftp'ed the entire catalog and there is no database file, not online and not on my PC and I still don't know how to how to get XAMPP running on my PC without filling an empty database. I appreciate all your help.

Cheers,

Ed
