Price field can only be numeric, right?

My client is wanting to be able to enter either a number, or text to the price field. I've installed the "Hide Price" contribution and am suggesting he add the text he wants to his description (things like "Sold" "On hold" "Call for Price," depending on the situation.

 

Am I correct that the price field is numeric only, and can't deviate from that? In other words, there's no way to change it to a text and/or number field and still have it do what it needs to do.
