wheeloftime Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 JustOnlineShopHi, this is my first ever shop, it is now live, please take a look and leave me your feedback, good or bad, any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Like the color setting also but I would make some more layout changes over time as the shop is very stock as it is now. Some remarks: - You have a broken image link at the right top when you choose a manufacturer - The All Product Link is a good thing but very slow on your site. Mainly I think because you use the version with images which might not be a good idea with many products on a slower server - Get rid of 'Top' in your breadcrumb, it is the same link as 'Catalog' and serves no purpose - For the moment you have only one language. If that is the only language you will use you can remove the language infobox altogether. Well done for a start and good luck with your shop !
lee246 Posted August 19, 2005 Author Posted August 19, 2005 Thanks for the comments, i'm am hoping to change the layout as I go, I'm learning as I go along so each time I learn something I'll try to implement it.
lee246 Posted September 19, 2005 Author Posted September 19, 2005 Added a few more contributions but mainly concentrated on seo. I've also added a forum as I thought this would be appealing to customers. I now need as many comments/opinions as possible as I want this shop to be really good so please let loose. I will not take offence to anything. Thanks.

FalseDawn Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Stock. Ask again when you have added some individuality to it.
lee246 Posted September 20, 2005 Author Posted September 20, 2005 It's not just about the looks. Until I learn a lot more about design there's not a lot that can be done on that side. What about functionality? Ease of use? Features?

What about functionality? Ease of use? Features? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Have to agree with falsedawn i'm afraid. I thought it was completely stock until i saw you had added some products and the colour is a bit lighter. ease of use and functionality don't appear to be any different to the stock osCom and don't know what features you've added. I personally don't like the stock cat menu or showing category counts. The small images are a bit poor and could probably do with using an image contribution to sharpen them up. Thats about it really. Good luck. A little knowledge is dangerous, I SHOULD KNOW. If Life Begins At 40, What ends????

Do you know of any good contributions/methods that will help me move away from the stock look? Thanks, Lee.
lee246 Posted October 26, 2005 Author Posted October 26, 2005 Hi, just a quick update. My store now no longer looks stock, I have spent over a month slowly changing the appearance and I still have little bits and bobs to do ie. buttons etc. Here are some of the things I have done: I have removed the 'top' link from the breadcrumb as suggested. I have removed the shopping cart and checkout links from the breadcrumb as they do the same job as the buttons in the header. I have also removed the language box as suggested. I have moved the side boxes around. I have disabled the category count as suggested and also feel this helps speed up the loading time. Please feel free to leave any comments/suggestions etc as I find them all useful. As you can see I try to implement suggested changes where possible if I feel it benefits my store and my customers. Thanks, Lee.
Mediajuggle Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 you should change the buttons to reflect the new look of your site... My Contribution Music Download Store Template http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,4275
lee246 Posted October 27, 2005 Author Posted October 27, 2005 Hi, I am actually in the process of doing that, take a look at the buy now button as an example. Thanks, Lee.
lee246 Posted October 27, 2005 Author Posted October 27, 2005 All the buttons have now been changed and updated to fit in with the store layout. Any more comments/suggestions people? Thanks, Lee.
Mediajuggle Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 i would get rid of the oscommerce cartoon images like the one that appears on your front page. My Contribution Music Download Store Template http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,4275
lee246 Posted October 27, 2005 Author Posted October 27, 2005 Lol, your right on par with me. I've started to remove all my old category images and replace them with a 1pixel transparent gif, and I'm also going to do the same with the cartoon images. More suggestions/comments please, keep them coming!!!!
Chance Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 You do realize its going to be next to impossible to get search engine rankings for DVDs, Music CDs, and PC/Mac software right? Your site is fine (abet a bit stock, but thats been covered), but how do you plan to compete with the giants? What is your unique selling proposition? What is the buyers motivation to buy from you instead of a well known national distributor? My advice comes in two flavors- Pick the one that won't offend you. lee246 Posted October 28, 2005 Author Posted October 28, 2005 I have already realised this fact. Instead of targeting such general keywords as DVDs, Music CDs, and PC/Mac software, I have been more specific. I have done my research and after some advice, I now have more specific keywords with around 100,000 or less searches for them. I also can offer a slightly reduced price over big stores as my profit margin is smaller. Thanks, Lee.
