Authorize.net - error: "server can't connect

I loaded the contribution Authorize.net Consolidated for AIM 1.8. When i try to checkout, I receive this error near the top of the page: "The server cannot connect to Authorize.net. Please check your cURL and server settings."

This happens whether using Test or Production mode. I know the Authorize.net account name and transaction code/password are correct because we use them for another store which has been online for two years (not osCommerce). cURL is compiled with php.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I've been working on this for 2 days and I'm getting very frustrated.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
