Main categories with product images on main page

Hello everyone!

 

I am looking for a contribution that can display the main categories with random product images on the main page. Something like the "New Products For ..." module but this time it will break up into the top level categories and display up to three products per category. I know that this is somewhat possible as when you click on a top level category, you will get the "New Products For ..." box with the products that are currently under it. Alas, I am no programmer and will need some help here.

 

Try as I may but I really could not find a contribution that may work for me. I have tried countless contributions on my site. One of those that I have tried is the Wolfen Featured Sets (which is a great contribution by the way) but it is not what I am looking for.

 

Maybe I have not tried hard enough so I really need some directions here. If you know of a contribution or can suggest new codes, please let me know. Your help is greatly appreciated. Lastly, please pardon me if this topic is in the wrong section.

Sorry, I forgot to add certain things which may give you an idea of what I am looking for.

 

This idea came about when I looked at The Apple Store the other day. Please note that I am not looking for a way to display the top level categories images in a box.
