Optional gift card & message at checkout

Hi there

 

I am building an oscommerce website for somebody.

 

Some of their products are ideal as gifts - they want the site to have functionality that lets the customer pick whether they want a gift card & personal message attached to their order, when at the checkout, just prior to paying.

 

They dont want this option on the product page (e.g. as an attribute) - but instead at the final checkout stage, because you wouldnt have a gift card with every product, just the final order.

 

Can this be achieved? It would basically have to add a small amount to the total order as they'd want the gift card, and give you a box to write the message in.

 

I wouldnt know what to search for as a contribution, if anyone has implemented one that achieves the above please let me know.

 

Or if anyone can propose a logical way around this request that'd be great also!

I think my first post may be a bit misleading. Here's a simplified version of my functionality request:

 

Customer has completed their browse of the site and are ready to checkout. They click checkout.

 

They are asked by the website if they want to add a gift card to their order. (this would add a small money amount to their order total).

 

If they say yes they are given a text box to write in their personal message to go in the gift card. Upon completing this they go to shipping page/payment page and complete transaction

 

If they say no they go straight to next stage of checkout and pay as normal.

 

Is the above possible by any contribution - or can anyone say how this could be achieved?

what I would do is a different approach ... just add the gift card as a top level product, which will make it almost invisible (it would show on an all products page though). on the page displaying the shopping cart, offer this product below it to click to the cart, but only if it's not already in the cart. Tel?l customers to specify the message in the comments box. By far the easiest approach especially with taxing and such. There is a mod for giftwrapping I think and it is buggy as it does not add tax correctly. I had to deinstall it as I did not get it to work, but I prefer using attributes anyway ... which you do not, lol, obviously.
