newby needs help

OK here goes, I've bought a site, which is up and running....no problems there, but i want to make amendments and have no idea how to do it. All i have is a password for my admin area. I mainly want to add a title and description to the header section and add in some code from google adword to monitor sales conversion rates.

Do i need to download any software onto my home PC like FTP or OScommerce or PHP?

How do i go about editing these files.... and backing them up!!!

 

I'm a little lost how the whole thing works is there a guide or manual of some sort?
