noob struggling with permissions

i've found the forum really useful so far, i manually added the oscommerce.sql to my database as the auto install didn't do it by following instructions found here.

 

I uploaded the amended files to get away from the fatal error on global registration again from this forum.

 

Now I get a whole host of errors trying to configure. Having read the quick install guide i think my problem is permissions however when i try to change permissions on my folders and config files i get the following message "550 Could not change perms on configure.php: Success" i am using ftp surfer and the help guide is non existent

 

please come to my rescue again :D

Try setting the permissions through your web hosting control panel - many servers do not allow this using an FTP client.
