moving a backup to a new installation

Here's my issue:

My client is getting screwed out of his own store by his web developer. The WD won't give my client a backup of the files. We have successfully grabbed the backup file that OSC creates, and we have successfully installed (using the Fantastico script) OSC on a new hosted server.

Is there an easy way to get his store functional on the new server? I've tried doing a restore with the backup file we got off the original server, but it doesn't seem to do anything at all. I was hoping there would be an easy way to install products apply preferences to the OSC interface as to make this an easy, seamless transition- any way to do this?

TIA.

You should be able to restore the database onto the new server. You should also be able to connect via FTP to the old site and copy all the files. Alternately, try the control panel (if they have one) to take a home directory backup.

Ok... I managed to get most, if not all, of the files through SiteSucker and the File Manager area in the Admin tool.

I have installed most of the files necessary, changed appropriate paths, and have the new store functioning for the most part. I've tried to restore the backup to the new server installation, and it does not seem to do anything. I was hoping that the restore feature would restore the categories and products, but it doesn't touch this area. Is there a fast way to import the categories and products from the old server? How is that best done?
