Hi,

i Installed OS Commerce and when I tried to install it I got a fatal error. I did a seach through the archives of this board and the info said that I needed Register Globals Patch File Set and also Register Global Patch Files 1. I have uploaded these to my site, but I am still getting the message:

FATAL ERROR: register_globals is disabled in php.ini, please enable it!

I have saved the os commerce folder install in my public_html file - where my top level shop files are.

The admin file is still contained in the install folder (I thought safer to leave it in the default location with the default name until I understand what I'm doing.

Is there anything I am supposed to do apart from uploading the patch files?

Can someone also give me an idea of how long it takes from installing the software (successfully) to actually finishing your site? Assuming about 20 pages that need shopping baskets etc added? I am planning to open on 22nd and worrying that I will run out of time.

I have written html for 6 years - but this is all new to me!

Thanks, Louise

look in c:\windows directory for the php.ini open it up with word or note pad seach for the line register_global Off and set to register_globals On .

Or you can install one of the register globals contributiions first

Hello,

PHP.ini is generally controlled by server service provider.Either ask them to change the setting in php.ini or you can place your own php.ini just in the root. This will over ride the previous settings.

Hope this helps you get going.

If you need further assistance please give further details.

Cheers..............

The time you spend getting your store set up largely depends on how many products you are adding, how you are adding them and how much customization you do to your cart. If you just want to set up the cart change the border images to your own and fill in your info this being the first time you have done this realisticly if you dont run into a huge amount of problems with the install you could have it ready to add products in a few hours.

Adding products can be a bit time consuming but still no reason you shouldnt be able to get it all done by the 22nd. Especially with the support base we have here. so many good people willing to answer questions.

Also chances are the hosting provider is going to be unwilling to change the Register Globals setting for you. I have been running into this alot lately. Chances are its a windows hosting company, I say this because all the rest have been. I havent tried the putting the php.ini in your web root suggested but I am not sure how that would work on a windows host. I believe that IIS has to acctually be restarted before new php settings will take effect but you can try it. If that doesnt work you might want to look into trying a different hosting company. Ask them in advance if they turn Register Globals off in there php.ini file.

If you decide to try putting the php.ini in your root please let me know if it works and if possible if your company is using windows servers.

Even if you turned on Register Globals via a local php.ini file it wouldn't last. Local php.ini files get overwritten by the main php.ini file every time there's an upgrade. The first time you'd know about it would be when you couldn't see your website.

So - install the Register Globals Patch Files!

If you have your site hosted then there wouldn't be a problem as your host will do that for you, but you might want to make the changes one way or the other if your testing or running your own server and testing on your localhost.

As not everyone tests and edits on there live site.

Better to be safe than sorry. :D
