Checkout based on category?

Is there a module or contibution which would allow a different checkout page based on the category of the product being purchased? I've searched and can't find one. We need to have certain online rental-item categories which require the online approval of a rental contract before paying the rental fee online (instead of an out-right purchase, which also have, and don't require an agreement.)

 

If there is no module or contribution, can anyone give me any guidance on the best way to proceed with this? I was thinking I could write some code in the checkout_payment.php page that recognizes the rental item's category and then directs the buyer to the proper checkput_confirmation page where they would have to approve the contract. However, I'm new to OScommerce and am still trying to find out how the product ids are related to the checkout procedure.
