Using .htaccess and .htpasswd : howto?

As the topic says, how do you make use of .htaccess and .htpasswd

I've gathered that

You need to add a .htaccess file, that reads a username/password from .htpasswd (or similar)

 

 

However I'm not sure what needs to be in the .htaccess file, or in the .htpasswd file

 

 

Are there any examples out there? At the moment I'm having to remove all read/write/execute permissions from my folders when I'm not working on the site incase someone malicious derails it, however this isn't a permanent solution as it also leaves oscommerce unusable!

 

Any help appreciated! :o

Many hosts have the ability to set this from the CPanel. That is easier to use than creating your own files.

I don't have that access as I use a sub-account of a friends

 

However I did find a link to this http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess3.shtml which is a good step-by step example, hopefully it weill work or is useful for someone else

there are many tips and tricks on how to setup htaccess, both in the tips and tricks and contributions, thus searching these forums will show you how to do just about everything, even though this is an item which is a prerequisite of what you need to know to properly maintain a web site.
